Why Your Light Beer Makes Your Fat

Beer bellies get their name for a reason. A lot of people have the misconception that switching to a "Light" beer a way to manage their weight and skip on the heavy carb beverage. While yes, switching to a "Light" beer will aide in some weight loss by cutting the carbs and calories, that "Light" beer still contains alcohol. Alcohol impares your body from losing fat. Without a full blown chemistry lesson, beer, once broken down in your body creates waste products known as Acetate and Acetaldehyde. Both the Acetate and Acetaldehyde signal for your body to STOP burning fat. At the same time, your body starts making fat from another waste product of alcohol called acetyl CoA. In short, alcohol stops the fat burning, and on top of that, builds more fat that the body can't burn. This same process happens when you drink any type of alcohol. Whiskey, gin, vodka, and wine included all inhibit the fat burning process. In short, if you're starting a diet or have been on a diet where you have seemingly "hit a the wall", try holding off on the adult beverages.  Set a goal to go without the stuff for 4 weeks. In no time, you will see that beer belly  start to shrink. And it's not like you you're never going to drink again, it's just 4 weeks. But then it's up to you to make better choices, or to buy bigger pants.

My Fat Secret to Weight Loss

Last year after the Superbowl, I decided to challenge myself to lose 30 pounds. Not that I was huge, but I could afford to lose a little weight as most of us could/can. I started my program Feb. 2, 2010 and met my goal April 5, 2010. I  ate what I wanted when I wanted (This includes Red Velvet cupcakes!). A year later (present), I have managed to keep the weight off and subdued. Friends that have not seen me in a while often ask what did I do to lose the weight. I would LOVE nothing better than to give them some great diet fad someone made up, however I didn't follow a diet trend or fad. Instead I used my common sense (below) and a little Fat Secret.
  •      Your body is like a car. To get somewhere the car needs fuel. Same with the body. If you want to get somewhere or do something your body needs fuel. Food = Fuel. The problem most of us have is filling the gas tank up until it overflows. Just like the mess the fuel leaves on your car, food leaves the mess on your gut, thighs, neck, or butt.
  •      Your body's like a bank. A bank allows you to deposit money and withdraw money. Your body acts much the same, but instead of money, it's calories. To MAINTAIN  your account at the bank you need to keep "X" amount of money in the account.  When bills are due money will be coming out. Knowing this you have to deposit more money to maintain the desired balance. When applying this to the body it's pretty much the same. To MAINTAIN your current weight you have to consume "X" amount of food. Unlike the bank account though, we tend to borrow from China to fill our account/belly with a National Debt sized surplus.
For example: I am 29 years old. 6' 1" and weigh 163 lbs and live an "active lifestyle".  To MAINTAIN this weight I must consume 3,100 calories and stay active. Staying active allows me to eat and burn the fuel needed. This works the exact opposite if I consume the same calories but burn less being less active.
If I only slept and rested all day, my body would consume roughly 1,800 calories to keep me alive. (That's right, your body keeps working even when you don't.) If I ate the recommended 3,100 calories and only burned 1,800, I would have a surplus of 1,300  calories that would have to be stored somewhere since it's not being used. Now if I did this for one week (7 days), my surplus of extra fuel/money/fat would reach 9,100 calories = 2.6 lbs (1lb fat is roughly 3,500 calories). This excess would bring my weight to 165.6lbs. Not what you want, unless your goal is to put on weight.
Next, say I want to lose weight at 163 lbs. In order to do this I must consume less calories than would be needed to maintain 163 lbs. For example if I was looking to shed about a pound a week I would need to have a calorie target of about 2,600.The key to knowing this less calorie technique now is to NOT starve yourself. If you cut too many calories and begin to starve yourself your body pretty much goes into storage mode. It starts keeping anything you eat, because it doesn't know when it will get fuel/food again.
You need to calculate what would be an adequate and safe amount of calories to cut from your diet. For example to lose about a pound a week at 163lbs my calorie goal would be to consume at/around 2600 calories a week. This should allow for about a pound of weight loss by the end of the week if I keep a moderately *active lifestyle.
So....where did I get my calculations? There are tons of diet and calorie calculators out there and on the internet. My choice... Fat Secret. Fatsecret.com is FREE and they offer TONS of neat features and even communities if you want to do a group weight loss thing. You have the choice to keep all of your information private or let others see what your eating habits are like. The tool will keep you honest, and it uses safe calculations to allow for safe weight loss. Hit the link to check it out.

Keys to Weight Loss  Goal - Plan - Motivation
Set an achievable GOAL. Implement a PLAN to meet your goal. And most important, you must have MOTIVATION. Without motivation, you wont stick to your plan, meaning you will not meet your goal. Out of the three keys, the most important is motivation. Until you establish this, expect nothing to happen. Use the Fatsecret tools your advantage and be consistant with your input. Even when you really don't want to put in your calorie info... do it anyway. I recommend to do it everyday until you obtain your goal. Once you meet your goal you can continue or you can ease off. By this time you will have learned what you can and can't have to maintain. Lastly, CHEAT! Have a set cheat day once a week. Eat, drink, and be merry for one day out of the week. You deserve it! I'll get off my soap box now. Thanks for your time if you made it this far!

Disclaimer: This is not a diet program, this is what worked for me. Everyone is different and should consult your physician before starting any weight loss program.

*Active lifestyle – minimal sitting and/or resting and may work in an environment requiring standing and/or some physical work. Regularly perform moderate exercise, such as dancing, brisk walking or swimming.

3G, 4G, LTE, WiMax WTF?

3G, 4G, LTE, WiMAX - WTF?
It seems like every time we turn around a cell phone company is throwing around a new words claiming their network is better and it's the way of the future. 3G, 4G, LTE, WiMax...  Uneducated consumers have no idea what these terms mean. A lot of us only know what the big networks tell us. I thought I would try to "trim the fat" and break it down to the "cliff notes" version.
3G or 3rd Generation wireless standards, is a term used to classify the speed of data transfer over a mobile communication device. To be considered 3G the application service system (eg. cell phone or mobile internet devices) must allow simultaneous use of speech and data services, and provide peak data rates of at least 200 kbit/s according to the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000.
4G or 4th Generation of cellular wireless standards. Speed requirements for 4G service set the peak download speed at 100 Mbit/s for high mobility communication (eg. from trains or cars) and 1 Gbit/s for low mobility communication (eg. in a crowds or seated at a restaurant). In short, 4G is supposed to be like the speed of broadband on your home computer.
3GPP aka LTE - Long Term Evolution is the latest standard in the mobile network technology. Although LTE is often marketed as 4G by many carriers, the first-release LTE does not fully comply with the 4G requirements. In short, your mobile provider is capitalizing on public ignorance. They tell you it's raining, when the reality is the're peeing on your leg. The LTE specification requires downlink peak rates of at least 100 Mbps, an uplink of at least 50 Mbps and RAN round-trip times of less than 10 ms. (Really-Really Fast)
WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a telecommunications protocol that provides fixed and fully mobile Internet access. WiMAX was the first 4G mobile broadband network out of the gate here in the U.S. (Sprint) The current WiMAX revision provides up to 40 Mbit/s and is expected to offer up to 1 Gbit/s fixed speed. WiMAX is more of an open internet service and its devices will be compatible with most all internet devices.  LTE, on the other hand, is more exclusive to certain internet service providers (ISP).
While LTE might be "Less open", it's specs consider it technically faster than WiMax. This I'm sure is one reason why both Verizon Wireless and AT&T are starting to push the LTE  terminology even though it might not be LTE (standards)...yet. The battle of the carriers is far from over. Soon LTE and WiMAX will find their place as did VHS vs Beta, HD DVD vs Blue Ray, and CD vs MP3. Who will win this one? Well that depends on which carrier you make the check out to.

Hope I was able to shed a little light on the subject for who ever might be reading this.

High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR)

Chevrolet Avalanche Frozen in Time & HDR
Thought I would post one of my many artistic outlets tonight...This one is my Photography. I plan on sharing some of my many photos on my blog spot here and thought I would provide the definition to one of my techniques I use know as High Dynamic Range Photography (HDR).

HDR is basically a set of techniques that allow for a greater dynamic range of luminance between the lightest and darkest areas of an image. This wide dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight. The two main sources of HDR imagery are computer renderings and the merging of multiple photographs as above. The latter of which in turn are individually referred to as low dynamic range (LDR) or standard dynamic range (SDR) photographs. *Tone mapping techniques, which reduce overall contrast to facilitate display of HDR images on devices with lower dynamic range, can be applied to produce images with preserved or exaggerated local contrast for artistic effect as mine above.

Are you confused yet? Haha! I hope you enjoy some of my photos that I plan to share with you.

*Tone Mapping-  is to map one set of colors to another; Essentially, tone mapping addresses the problem of strong contrast reduction from the scene values (radiance) to the displayable range while preserving the image details and color appearance important to appreciate the original scene content. Print-outs, CRT or LCD monitors, and projectors all have a limited dynamic range which is inadequate to reproduce the full range of light intensities present in natural scenes. Tone Mapping software basically fixes these issues to provide an image that is viewable on your computer monitor or in print.

If you want to find out more about HDR and photography, my Father-in-law has a great blog where he shares his work flow, tips, and can provide you some awesome discounts on some needed software. Check out: Another "Rich" Collectable Photography.

Cream Cheese Icing

On my "sister site", LittleJudys.com I just posted an AWESOME and EASY Cream Cheese Icing recipe. I figured I would share it in both places. If you're interested, you can check out my other recipes (some with picture tutorials) at-> That Recipe Blog. Below is the Cream Cheese Icing recipe, I hope you enjoy!

Cream Cheese Icing
Ingredients
1 1/2 sticks of butter - room temperature
1 1/2 (8 oz) pkg Cream cheese - room temperature
1 lb or 1 Box of Confectioner sugar (aka powdered) sugar
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp Vanilla Extract
Directions
Cream together butter and cream cheese until smooth. Sift in confectioner sugar and mix. (Mix in slowly to prevent partially cloudy sky of powdered sugar in your kitchen) Add salt and vanilla extract and continue to mix. Mix until it reaches your spreading consistency.
Note: If you desire a more sweeter icing, add more confectioner sugar. If it’s too sweet for your taste, add 1/2 a tsp to 1 tsp of lemon juice. Be sure to mix the newly added ingredients well. Taste again to ensure it’s what you like.

Verizon iPhone Details

As I'm sure you have heard by now Big Red (Verizon Wireless -VZW) has announced the Apple iPhone will now be available on their network. During the press event only vague details were  given, aside from, VZW will be selling the iPhone.  Below is my attempt to clarify and summarize what is known.

VZW iPhone Fact Summary
  • AT&T loses Apple iPhone Exclusivity.
  • 1/11/11 @ 11 AM VZW holds large press event to announce a partnership with Apple thus allowing them to sell the iPhone.
  • The iPhone 4 will be available for PRE-ORDER to current VZW customers 2/3/10. (Over night shipping will be free per VZW's website) Basically, if you are a VZW customer you can have the VZW iPhone about a week ahead of everyone else not currently with VZW.
  • New customers with VZW will be allow to purchase the iPhone 4 on 2/10/11.
  • VZW will be offering the iPhone for the same price as AT&T.
  • $199 16GB $299 32GB WITH 2 YEAR CONTRACT.
  • ~$599 $649.9916GB ~$699 $749.99 32GB NO CONTRACT.(Updated 1/20/11)
  • The DEATH GRIP antenna issue resolved with apparent redesign of the VZW iPhone.
  • Because the antenna issued is reportedly fixed, no free bumper cases.
  • Black iPhone will be immediately available (Dates above)
  • White iPhone was pulled from the VZW website and will reportedly available to all carriers Spring 2011.
  • No iPhone pricing plans (data plans) have been officially released.
  • VZW iPhone 4 is CDMA, NOT LTE.
  • VZW iPhone can be used to tether up to 5 other devices via "MiFi".
  • In terms of hardware, Verizon will have almost the exact same device. The major difference is the CDMA chips inside the Verizon iPhone that will allow it to run on Verizon's network. On the outside, the few will notice that the Verizon iPhone 4's ringer/mute switch on the top left side has been moved slightly downward. Apple states it was done to accommodate the CDMA chips on the inside, and consequently CURRENT iPhone 4 cases and bumpers currently on the market WILL NOT FIT CORRECTLY.

I will continue to update as more details are unveiled.

Happy Verizon iPhone Eve!

For over four years now, Verizon Wireless (VZW) customers have been waiting for the coveted Apple device to reach their network. Tomorrow, that will change. As previously reported, VZW will be hosting a special event in NYC to announce their newly obtained device. VZW keeps the hype going by Tweeting today FROM an iPhone "Getting ready to make news on Tuesday." I suspect Steve Jobs (Founder of Apple) might even make a guest appearance for the highly anticipated announcement.

With AT&T losing exclusivity of the iPhone, VZW is setting itself up to possibly put the final nail in the coffin. No matter how many commercials AT&T airs about how great their network coverage is, it's not, and their customers have been pretty loud about how bad it actually is.  AT&T has also since eliminated unlimited data plans on their network, VZW however has yet to do that. The unlimited plan allow users to fully use the newly obtained device to its full potential. Some sources have put the price for the iPhone unlimited data plan at $29.99 or roughly $30.00 a month. Tomorrow I'm sure we will know more but, I thought I would share what is know/speculated so far. Happy Verizon iPhone Eve Everyone!

UPDATE: As I reported above about AT&T's lack of coverage.

"Coverage?" App shows Verizon (Left)  vs AT&T (Right)...That's a LOT of red!

There's an App for that... A new iOS app from Technomadia  called Coverage? lets you easily see what carrier is where, and how much coverage there is. The app uses Google Maps and reportedly supports zooming and multitouch. Coverage? costs $1.99 and is currently available in the Apple App Store for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Championship Chicken Wings

Championship Chicken Wings

Ingredients
Oil - enough for deep frying
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup hot sauce (We HIGHLY recommend Franks Hot Sauce!)
1 dash ground black pepper
1 dash garlic powder
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
10 chicken wings

Directions
  1. 1.In a small bowl mix together the flour, paprika, cayenne pepper and salt. Place chicken wings in a large nonporous glass dish or bowl and sprinkle flour mixture over them until they are evenly coated. Cover dish or bowl and refrigerate for 60 to 90 minutes.

Tip: We use a sifter to sprinkle on flour mixture evenly then flip to coat the opposite side.

  1. 2.Heat oil in a deep fryer to 375 degrees F. (I usually put my stove dial at just over Medium.) The oil should be just enough to cover wings entirely, or at least half way up.

  1. 3.Combine the butter, hot sauce, pepper and garlic powder in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir together and heat until butter is melted and mixture is well blended. Remove from heat or set on low heat to reserve for serving. Stir occasionally if left on low heat.

  1. 4.Fry coated wings in hot oil for 10 to 15 minutes, or until parts of wings begin to turn brown. Remove from heat, place wings in serving bowl, add hot sauce mixture and stir together. Serve.

Took my new metal detector for a spin last night and this morning. I've never done it before so it's an learning process. It's certainly fun. Thought I would share my booty with you. No money yet but one day I hope to post some good fortune on here.

Trend Points to Verizon iPhone Available February 3?

"Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain" -Wizard of Oz
In June of last year, Apple selected the dates of Thursday 24th to Sunday the 27th for its iPhone 4 weekend launch. In addition, I discovered that Verizon Wireless (VZW) typically launches their new devices on Thursdays. While still unofficial that the VZW iPhone is the device that will be announced on next Tuesday (1/11/11). The 3rd of February now seems like the ideal date of release if both Apple and Verizon continue to stick to their trends.

Verizon iPhone to Public by End of January/Early February

Just an update on what we already know. Verizon Wireless (VZW) will indeed announce the long awaited iPhone coming to their network this Tuesday (1/11/11 @ 11AM in NYC). The obvious next question is when will it be available for consumer purchase? A recent report from Reuters claims a source close to Apple confirms the announcement day is Tuesday, and that the iPhone itself will go on sale in "a few weeks".  Some folks seem to feel it VZW customers will get their hands on them by the end of January, others early February. Based on how February 1st is a Tuesday (The historic fair/common release day) I'm leaning toward the February 1st release, but only time will tell. The February date will give VZW time to prep for anticipated big sales publicly. The push for public release in February could also mean some great NFL Super Bowl commercials from Big Red (VZW). Could this be the knife twist to AT&T?  Stay Tuned...

iPad 2 Under the Radar

The speculated iPad 2 @ CES (Note the camera hole)
The iPad 2 reportedly has been spotted at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week. In the midst of an imminent/speculated iPhone Launch, I can only assume that Apple could also release their 2nd Generation iPad in early February as well. Verizon Wireless (VZW) has already sent press invites asking to "Join us for the latest news at Verizon Wireless" (Date 1/11/11 @11AM). With a such a massive event like CES this week, don't you think VZW would have taken the opportunity to announce some of it's biggest news on one of the biggest stages? No... If your familiar with Apple, Apple tends to carve their own path and move to the beat of their own drum.  It's already well known that Apple has asked employees to refrain from taking vacation days for the first 3 weeks in February. You could assume that it's because of the upcoming high demand for the iPhone on VZW. But flying under the radar and in the background of the VZW iPhone is the iPad 2. I can see VZW making their announcement, and then Steve Jobs and Apple will have a separate event to announce/confirm the iPhone on VZW. It's then, Steve Jobs could introduce you to the NEW iPad 2. Both will obviously be hot ticket items, and since the employees are going to be working without vacation for the first three weeks in February already, they might as well be busy right!? Not, saying, I'm Just saying...

Blog Header

Here is my original picture that I am using for my Blog Header. I use Photoshop Elements 8 to create the header, watermark, and other processes when needed. the above photo info as follows.

CameraCanon EOS Digital Rebel XS
Exposure0.001 sec (1/1600)
Aperturef/6.3
Focal Length18 mm
ISO Speed200

No Processing (Except for noted watermark)

My beautiful wife had just bought the camera for me as a birthday gift. It was not long that I had, had the camera before I captured this awesome picture! Thanks again Babe!

How I created my Header:
In PSE 8 I opened the photo. Cropped the portion of the image I wanted. From the top menu (Next to File and Edit) I Selected "Image" > "Resize"> "Image Size". Set my pixel dimensions to Width 450 Height 150 and clicked ok. I then added text and effects by clicking Text (below the wand tool); Selected Font, and Size. Typed "The Jimmy Batte Blog" where I wanted it. I then clicked the check mark to accept. I then Right clicked to bring up Style Settings. Selected desired Drop Shadow and angle. An Apple Byte

Apple today announced that the Mac App Store is now open for business with more than 1,000 free and paid apps. The Mac App Store brings the revolutionary App Store experience to the Mac, so you can find great new apps, buy them using your iTunes account, download and install them in just one step. The Mac App Store is available for Snow Leopard users through Software Update as part of Mac OS X v10.6.6.

"With more than 1,000 apps, the Mac App Store is off to a great start," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "We think users are going to love this innovative new way to discover and buy their favorite apps."

Apple also seems to be on the brink of releasing the long waited for Verizon iPhone. Hint's and rumors lead me to believe it will be before Valentines Day which is February 14th. Some intel reports Apple has asked that employees refrain from taking time off for the first three weeks in February. Possible Verizon iPhone to be announced in January and released February 1, 2011? Seems it would have to be if they really are asking folks to refrain from taking time off. It's like when UPS employees can't take time off at Christmas... They know they are going to be busy. Same holds true for Apple I can imagine. Only time will tell.

(Plausible announcement dates: 1/11/11, 1/26/11, or 1/28/11)
